Utah's Economy is DRIVEN by the hospitality, tourism, and restaurant industries.  Many small, locally owned businesses are being impacted by closures and reduced business due to COVID-19.

Employees have been laid off.  Businesses & restaurants are closing with no idea when they might reopen.  Business owners are scrambling to find ways to meet payroll and rent.  It is impacting our economy and our citizens at unprecedented levels.

We've seen our community step and support restaurants and other small businesses, but now it is time for our leaders in government to help!

Governor Herbert and the state of Utah, it is time follow in footsteps of other states and to require insurers to pay COVID-19 business interruption claims.

This will have a far-reaching, trickle-down impact on our local economy.  Here is what it means - for all of us:

  1. Restaurant Owners and others in the Hospitality Industry will be able to actually pay their employees while they are shut down.  This means they are not burdening our unemployment system with a large number of claims.
  2. Landlords will be able to receive rent from their tenants - relieving their burden.
  3. Restaurants will be able to re-open without great (or impossible) financial hardship to the owners by absorbing financial losses in the short term to allow for more jobs coming back in the long term.
  4. Other businesses and suppliers that are supported by the restaurant industry will be able to stay in business - including farmers, wholesalers, small food producers, marketing professionals and more.

We pay to insure our businesses and we want to continue to stay in business and support our employees and the people that depend on us.

It is clear that if small businesses in the restaurant and hospitality industry do not get help, quickly, from our state government, they and their employees will face long term consequences.

Time is not on our side. We are calling on the State of Utah to act now and help ease the burden on our industry while maintaining safe practices to slow the spread of COVID-19.
