Firefighters both paid and volunteer, respond to emergencies every day in personal vehicles. It is a serious issue to respond quickly and safely to emergencies when other drivers on the road do not know you are responding to an emergency. Police are permitted to run lights and sirens in their personal vehicles so people can be aware of their response to emergencies, yet firefighters are told they cannot even though the emergencies firefighters respond to are immediately dangerous to life and health. Quick and safe response to these emergencies is critical to save life and property yet response times are hindered by people not aware of the response that often drive slower than the posted speed limit in areas where passing them is unsafe without them pulling over. Firefighters and Police both must take courses in Emergency Vehicle Operations and Response to ensure they can handle and maintain the vehicles driven to emergencies. This training can apply to the personal vehicles as well. Please help us to change this law so we can make our communities a safer place for citizens to live.
