Thank you fellow champions of justice!
I’m not a big one to look for special significance from milestones or markers, but we’ve recently passed the 250 signature mark, and it seemed like a good time to offer an update. It is still clear from the statistics offered by change.org and the names appearing on the petition that most folks are learning about this petition from friends and acquaintances sharing it with them. Please keep up this effort and keep the conversations going about this part of our history.
Notable news from our end is that we’ve filled out the Wisconsin DNR Geographic place name proposal form and included the demands from this petition. I’m not sure what factors they consider when making a decision on their end, but showing them the support this petition has gained could help pressure them into making the right choice. We’ve also reached out to the Friends of Governor Dodge State Park group. We’ve received some support from individuals in the group and also learned that the park has begun looking into having new interpretive signage created for the park by Driftless Pathways LLC. I emailed them about the petition and offered resources for their work.
As this effort has gained steam, we’ve updated other stakeholders as well, including the Meskwaki and Ho Chunk Nations, the Wisconsin Black Historical Society, and the Wisconsin DNR. If you all have suggestions for other folks who might have an interest in this petition, please reach out to us. Feel free to share the petition and our updates with groups that you're members of, your local paper, or other ways you're networking. We’re also open to suggestions for ways to make this an effective and inclusive effort, it’s our first attempt at using a petition as a tool for making change, and we’re open to ideas and other effective routes for change as well.
Thanks
