His Excellency Mr. Martyn Roper OBE, Governor, Cayman Islands

Dear Governor Roper,

I am writing to request your immediate intervention into the matter of Skylar Mack’s and Vanjae Ramjeet's incarceration in the Cayman Islands. We have all acknowledged that the couple violated the mandates put in place to protect the people of the Cayman Islands and the seriousness of their offense in violating such mandates. However, to view what happened through a set of black-and-white-only lenses overlooks some personal and highly relevant details about Skylar’s character.

Ms. Mack attends university and studies a pre-med curriculum.  This fact alone demonstrates her commitment to pursue a career of helping others and being of service.  I know Skylar and her family personally and can attest to her kind and generous nature.  She is also serious-minded and determined to improve the lives of others through a medical profession.  At the same time, she is young, carefree and idealistic as she experiences life.  It is because of her youth that she acted impulsively and did not follow the rules of quarantine.

When you were interviewed by the Cayman Compass in 2019 and asked the question “Looking back, what advice would you give your younger self?”, you answered “Always step back more and see things in a bigger perspective, which I think happens naturally as you get older.”  Your advice was quite wise.  Yet it was borne of having substantial life experience.  Skylar Mack lacks this same level of perspective and experience given her young age.

From what I have read about you, you are a “family man”, a devoted husband and father to your children.  I am a “family woman”, having raised four boys on my own following the death of my husband.  As parents who love our children and wish for them to succeed in life, I think you will understand how heart-wrenching it is for Skylar’s parents and extended family to accept her current circumstances.  It is devastatingly painful for them to listen to her cries for their help and yet, be unable to assist her.

While I don’t condone nor minimize the gravity of Skylar’s actions, I look back through the lenses of my own life experience and realize that they amount to a serious, but youthful indiscretion over her romantic feelings for a young man. Skylar understands that what she did was wrong and is extremely remorseful as is Vanjae.  I would hope that the reason for their sentences of imprisonment was to teach them a valuable life lesson.  Knowing Skylar as I do, I am confident that she has learned that lesson exceedingly well as has Vanjae.  Both young people would better serve the people of the Cayman Islands in their release through advisory and educational pursuits rather than further containment.

Above all, both Skylar and her family wish to be reunited so that she can move forward with her education and resume a normal, daily life.  Since you have the authority as Governor of the Cayman Islands to grant Skylar clemency,  We humbly ask that you act with understanding, compassion and grace as you intervene (with the powers of your Office and as a father to your own daughter) upon Skylar and Vanjae’s behalf and direct the criminal justice system to release them immediately.

With Sincere Appreciation,

Jan DeProspero
