On July 28, 2012, Chavis Carter, a 21-year-old Black male, was arrested by the Jonesboro Arkansas Police Department. According to the JAPD official report, as reported by The Associated Press, Chavis was sitting in the backseat of the police cruiser when he put the barrel of a handgun against his right temple and pulled the trigger "despite being handcuffed.” Prior to Chavis being placed in the car, Travis had been frisked twice by police officers on the scene. Still, reportedly, he used a “hidden“ gun in his possession to shoot himself.

Please sign this petition demanding that Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson, Arkansas Attorney General Leslie Rutledge, and JAPD Chief Rick Elliott reopen this case. Justice demands that a full investigation be launched into what really happened to Chavis Carter and that the JAPD officers involved in his untimely death be held fully accountable.
