Legalize Recreational Cannabis in New York

Recreational cannabis has already become legal 8 US states, and will soon be legal in other states. By making recreational cannabis legal, New York State would be able to tax and regulate cannabis/marijuana. A large percentage of those incarcerated in New York are incarcerated due to the war on drugs. Substantial research has shown that prison destroys the lives of those incarcerated, as after their time in prison they often have extreme difficulties finding jobs. Those given the label of convicts often have to be on welfare/government assistance long term. Legalizing recreational cannabis would save the state substantial sums of money by keeping cannabis users out of prison. Legal recreational cannabis would also lower the cost of medical cannabis in New York. Medical marijuana is priced out of the reach of many New Yorkers who need it. Any adult should be able to determine the benefits of cannabis and how much they should be used. This does not need to be filtered by a doctor. Where cannabis is legal and where people can purchase cannabis from legal businesses that pay taxes, organized crime is deprived of revenues it uses to buy weapons. As a matter of public safety and human rights recreational cannabis should be legal in New York, and the war on drugs should be ended. Too many New Yorkers have had their lives destroyed simply for smoking weed, and this is a violation of human rights of the highest order . This cannot continue in New York, particularly if New York wants to call itself a progressive state.
