Fair and equitable answer to fireworks.
Fair and equitable answer to fireworks.
The Issue
A problem exists with fireworks, particularly in the unincorporated areas of Harris County, being shot of at extreme times (ie 3 - 4 on Christmas Eve), for lenghty times (ie weeks around New Years and 4th of July), and odd times through out the year. These are a noise nuisance, fire hazard, problem for pets and veterans with PTSD. We are not asking that fireworks be denied. We are asking that they be regulated to specific areas, away from housing where they are a fire danger and people are attempting to sleep. We are recommending that places be set aside for people to come and do their fireworks is a safe and courteous way. If these areas are set up, fire trucks could be stationed to help if there were to be a fire rather than leaving it to various place through out the county from the sparks. Particularly this year it is very dry and fire is a grave danger. This past Christmas Eve, people were shooting off fireworks up until 5:00 am. At a minimum we asked for a curfew of 10:00 (with the exception of New Year's Eve of 1:00) to allow for quiet during sleeping times. We have many people that work during the holidays and must be up early as well as veterans for whom this is a problem. Thank you for considering this issue.
