Today in South Africa, a deadly industry thrives. Lions are harvested for their bones and sold to south east Asia, catering to primitive,  barbaric rituals. What’s worse, this “industry” masquerades as a legitimate tourist attraction, fooling thousands of volunteers into becoming accomplices.

Thousands of tourists every year  flock to  300 “lion parks” scattered throughout South Africa. Families pay to help look after the orphan cubs, separated from their mothers through unfortunate circumstances. What they don’t know, is that the cubs are bred “in house” and are torn from their mothers. The goal is to make lion “can food”. Once the cubs reach maturity, they are slaughtered and their bones stripped and packaged, destined for south East Asian market. The few “lucky” ones to escape this fate are drugged and sold to an amateur hunter, keen to bag a trophy.

Inside these “sanctuaries”  the cruelty is unimaginable. The cubs are constantly handled and patted despite needing to sleep most of the day. The nutrition is poor and inbreeding is rife. This leads to birth defects and animals are often born without limbs or grossly deformed. Forty percent of these cubs never survive to maturity. The ones that do face cruel murder and dismemberment for bone trade.

There are 300 of these “establishments” scattered through South Africa .  Many contain slaughterhouses, away from the eyes of the well-meaning volunteers. This is NOT a legitimate business. People volunteering their time  are unknowingly contributing to the death and torture of the animals they believe they’re protecting. There are more lions held captive and slaughtered than what’s left in the wild. Those remaining are  less genetically diverse and face imminent extinction.

The South African government has a responsibility  to the rest of us to preserve and nourish these animals. Turning a blind eye will lead to eventual disappearance of the entire lion species. It also perpetuates the horrid trade in animal organs.

Please sign this and stop this for the future of the South African lions .

The South African government needs to be accountable for what is happening.
