Friends,
Today is an important day with our honourable Supreme Court delivering a split verdict on the ban on wearing hijabs in government schools and colleges in my state (Karnataka)

While one judge has favoured upholding the hijab ban verdict of the Karnataka HC, the second judge has allowed all the appeals and set aside the HC’s judgment. Click here to spread the word so that more people come forward to support the right to hijab and kitab

The second judge also said: “The main thrust of my judgment is the entire concept of essential religious practice was not essential to the dispute. It is a matter of choice, nothing more and nothing less. The foremost question in my mind was the education of the girl child. Are we making her life any better?”

In the run-up to the verdict, I noticed one channel’s headline asking “Hijab or Kitab” (kitab = book/education). It should have said “Hijab and Kitab” because this matter is about the right to religious freedom and the right to education of girls. For us, it is not about one at the cost of the other. We should not be forced to choose between religion and education. This is not what our Constitution says. I hope the Chief Justice of India upholds our rights.

Please continue to share this petition in all forums and networks. 3.25 lakh people have signed our petition. May this number reach 4 lakhs, as this shows the strength of public support behind our cause.

Thank you.
