RECLASSIFY MEPHEDRONE (MKAT) AS A CLASS A DRUG

RECLASSIFY MEPHEDRONE (MKAT) AS A CLASS A DRUG
The Issue
Mephedrone (known as MKAT, bubble, meow meow etc) is now considered one of the most abused drugs in the UK within 16-24 year olds. It's effects are similar to that of cocaine and ecstasy, and it makes the user feel euphoric, ecstatic, socialable and, for want of a better word, 'lovey'. This all sounds like fun, but it's effects can be instantly addictive. It is unclear whether Mephedrone is physically addictive at this point, but it has proven in recent years to be extremely psychologically addictive and many have/currently are psychologically dependant on the drug.
The street price of mephedrone is roughly between £10-£20 for a gram. It is very rarely sold in it's pure form and is almost always cut with other unknown substances that can be dangerous to the health and in some cases fatal. Mephedrone itself is extremely dangerous in all forms and was the direct cause of 52 deaths in the UK in 2012 alone. The drug also has serious implications on regular users mental health, causing depression, anxiety and even drug induced psychosis.
It is now illegal to possess, supply or use Mephedrone but despite this, the number of deaths directly and indirectly are on the rise.
As an NHS professional, my personal opinion is that mephedrone is THE most dangerous drug on the streets at present. It is the most readily available drug in the UK, it is a fraction of the price of most other drugs and it is now becoming socially acceptable in all types of different social groups.
My main view is that people need more education on this, but I also believe that the reclassification of mephedrone as a class A drug is absolutely pivotal in the battle for its crack down; it is currently a class B drug.
Dealers of mephedrone are at an all time high and reclassifying the drug may be one step closer to eliminating some of the drug dealers on the streets.
