The Issue

As the Philippines continue to experience an increase number of cases everyday due to the COVID - 19 pandemic. COVID-19 has affected the life and health of more than 1 million people across the world. This overwhelms many countries’ healthcare systems, and, of course, affects healthcare providers such as nurses fighting on the frontlines to safeguard the lives of everyone affected. Exploring the issues that nurses face during their battle, putting an increase of salary for Filipino nurses amidst the COVID – 19 who had long been pleading for higher pay and better contract terms. In March, netizens criticized the Department of Health (DOH) after it called for healthcare workers to join the battle against COVID-19 as volunteers, with a mere daily allowance of P500, instead of properly hiring them and providing them with tenure and benefits. These interventions should be extended to our healthcare frontliners, a higher salary, as they continue to fight against COVID - 19. In the local labor market, an entry level registered nurse receives a salary of P8,000 - P13,500 per month. Registered Nurses hired at Hospitals commonly receive an average salary of P9,757 per month. They have unsafe working condition and workplace. We can see the love and dedication of Filipino nurses in the country as they risk their lives to protect millions of Filipinos. Besides the lack of personal protective equipment, our nurses are underpaid and do not get the respect they deserve from Filipinos. Even before the COVID - 19 pandemic, health workers have already been experiencing shift fatigue but still results for low salaries. The current outbreak has magnified it further. May this serve as an eye opener for the people to help our nurses! Let us have a change! Fight for Filipino Nurses!
