Reinvestigate whether Dhananjoy Chatterjee was hanged for someone else's crime

It was twelve years ago that the last judicial execution of our state took place, when Dhananjoy Chatterjee was hanged to death. It is well known that there were many who had questioned that hanging. Dhananjoy himself had claimed all along that he had been completely innocent. His wife, parents and near and dear ones had also claimed his innocence. Yet the government did not pay any heed to their appeal. It was the government that eventually executed Dhananjoy.

The new book Adalat-Media-Samaj ebong Dhananjoyer Fansi, written by two professors of the Indian Statistical Institute and an engineer working in the social sector, has brought into fore several new questions in this regard. Many of us are suspecting that Dhananjoy had to die simply because he came from a poor family of a remote village.

Given the situation, we earnestly request you to order a reinvestigation into the case of the murder allegedly committed by Dhananjoy, so that the truth can come out. If that investigation reveals that Dhananjoy had been innocent, let that fact be announced officially, to pave the way of posthumous exoneration. If that is indeed the case, let the real culprits of that murder be also brought to book.

A summary of the facts can be found in Details as well as case documents can be accessed from

Looking forward to your kind consideration.
