Reverse the sale of Black Johnshon Beach to a Chinese fish meal factory.

We appeal to you to urgently reconsider accepting a grant from the Chinese Government to open a fish meal factory and fishing port in Black Johnson Beach. Selling 250 acres of rainforest and beach for industrial fish processing is a decision that will destroy not only the environment, local populations, the country’s food chain, but also Sierra Leone’s international acceptance and reputation.

All studies and experience from neighboring countries point out that construction of such a factory would lead to the collapse of an entire eco-system. It would endanger species and destroy indigenous ways of life along the coast.

Fish meal processing generates toxic chemicals, which destroys fish breeding grounds. They decimate fish stocks and traditional lifestyles. The vanishing fish will lead to the collapse of turtle, dolphin, bird, insect and plant populations as well. It will be an ecological disaster for generations to come.

It is not too late to reconsider the deal and re-direct this investment into a project that will bring sustainable, environmentally safe alternatives for growth. Put an end to this deal which would destroy so much for immediate financial gain.
