Satellite image shows Nankumba Peninsula. Areas in green show density of forest cover. The X on the map marks Nkhudzi Bay, the green patch to left of the x shows the Nkhudzi Hills, the start of the Lake Malawi National Park and UNESCO world heritage site. The location of the tank sits in the middle of the green patch. There are two suitable sites just 6km west of the current proposed site.
We have been notified to also take into account the history of high seismic activity in Nkhuzi Hills area. Should the reservoir be built on the proposed site, a seismic tremor may cause the reservoir to fail, resulting in 1000 tons of treated water cascading down the mountainside. The village would be directly in this path. Such an event would be catastrophic with danger of loss to life and property, not to mention its effect on the environment and the archeological sites. This is a real risk and another reason why this project should be moved to a more suitable location.
We have found the ESIA to be flawed and biased. Endangered species have been omitted and mitigation measures for archeological sites very poor. Little effort has been made to thoroughly investigate alternative sites especially considering the special nature of this site, being in the LMNP and an UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Last day for Public Hearing to comment on ESIA is tomorrow, 23rd July, 9am (8am GMT) at Capital Hotel, Lilongwe. We request all that are able to attend to please do so and to publicy voice your concerns.
