Save the Powai Lake from Construction Activities and stop the Destruction of Ecosystem
The Issue
SUPPORT IITB STUDENTS & POWAI RESIDENTS
Namaskaram, Extensive digging, dumping & leveling of stones is carried out by BMC & MTDC (Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation) for a proposed cycle track of 10 KM over a water body & wetland inside the Powai Lake, Mumbai. The construction has already started over the water body in the lake side of Renaissance Hotel near Pipeline Road. The trees have been killed & the biodiversity is in danger. This project's specifics are not yet in the public domain. In the guise of beautifying & tourism, we reject the damage of Powai Lake's environment & biodiversity caused by construction operations on wetland & water bodies inside the lake.
Powai Lake provides food & shelter for over 200 bird species, as well as insects, fish, crocodiles, & other creatures. Despite containing only 2% of the Sanjay Gandhi National park's total surface, the lake is home to 88% of the park's avian species. Wetlands are important biological hotspots that give water & primary productivity to the ecosystem. We are urging to the authorities to halt the construction with an immediate effect.
