Dear GoK,

Start rejuvenation of Bellandur Lake IMMEDIATELY!

“Ever since I moved to the Bellandur area I have developed acute eczema and I often gasp for breath due to upper respiratory tract issues. A lot of children around me are facing similar issues.” says Bharathi, a Bangalore resident living near Bellandur Lake.

Bellandur Lake is the biggest lake in Bangalore. The lake, spread over 800 acres, receives about 500 MLD of sewage every day. The lake has been mired in controversy and reviews for far too long, besides frothing and foaming during rains and fires in summer.

In 2018, NGT conducted a trial on suo motu cognisance when Bellandur Lake caught fire and penalised the state government and civic bodies for their inaction.
Bellandur lake has become the largest septic tank in the city due to "sheer callousness and indifference", the green court had observed while ordering the government to take action.

As citizens, we were extremely gratified to note that restoration for Bellandur Lake would start soon as rejuvenation plans were drawn out, under the watchful eye of NGT and expert direction by IISc. Unfortunately litigating NGT orders in courts has begun which sets back the agenda about restoring the lake.

Our children are suffering in this polluted environment. Right to clean and healthy environment is a fundamental right as guaranteed by Article 21 of the constitution of India. With the looming water crisis, to lose our largest lake due to inaction would be an ecological and social disaster. Citizens of Bangalore can't wait any more and request GoK to continue to commit resources on gound for restoring Bellandur Lake NOW and complete the same in a time bound manner.
