Hi Friends,

Today is the 26th day since we submitted our petition to our Government of Jamaica on April 4 and 5th, 2019 (electronically and by hand delivery) respectively.

It is also the 45th day since we started our petition on March 9th, 2019.

To date 16,714 of us have united to petition our government to Increase the Subvention to the University of Technology, Jamaica, Commensurate with Need.

ACTION BY ACADEMIC STAFF

I just received word that effective today Tuesday 30th April, 2019, members of the University of Technology Academic Staff Union (UTASA) have "ceased all work-related activities and assignments until the salary adjustment agreed to in the 2015/2017 Head of Agreement (HOA) and signed by the Ministry of Finance and the Public Service, the Ministry of Education, Youth and Information and the management of the University is implemented" (See post below for full news release)

In addition, UTech, Jamaica's president, Prof. Stephen Vasciannie wrote today to the Hon. Nigel Clarke, Minister of Finance and the Public Service, as well as the Hon. Karl Samuda, Minister without Portfolio with Responsibility for Education and Youth - The Ministry of Education, Youth and Information, to indicate that the Academic Staff Union had advised him of their cessation of work. He requested the assistance of both ministries to resolve the matter.

How Does This Relate to the Subvention Issue?
An appropriate increase in the subvention from our Government would empower UTech, Jamaica to afford to make the over-due/retroactive payment, as well as to continue to pay lecturers at the agreed new rate of pay.

Do continue to monitor our Government's stewardship of government agencies, no less so their stewardship of our national University, University of Technology, Jamaica.

Keep standing with UTech, Jamaica! Keep sharing the petition. Let's get to 20,000 signatures.
