Sexual assault, child abuse, physical abuse, rape and murder have been rising at an alarming rate for over a decade around homes, schools, workplaces and public establishments in India. An episode of sexual violence occurs every 20 minutes in the country and an estimated 70% of women, is subjected to domestic violence at some point in their lives.
The Indian government, in April 2018, amended the law addressing these inhuman crimes and has introduced death penalty in its list of punishments. We express our gratitude to the government for this bold move.
Innumerable studies on sexual assault against women and children indicate that rape is now resulting in murder. This inevitably throws light on the fact that women who physically ‘fight’ for their survival will most likely be killed by the perpetrator.
Over the years in India, the concept of ‘self-defense’ has been misunderstood in a way where it’s constantly stressed on physical action against violence. However, we must also acknowledge the fact that a male perpetrator is, in most cases, physically more capable of harming a female despite her physical training with equal might.
It is also proven that women are emotionally stronger in many ways. The need of the hour, hence, is to ‘train’ women and girls to be smarter in a difficult situation, than exhibiting physical strength as their first plan of action.
The True meaning of Self-defense’ techniques are followed by -
Vocal Defense, Self Awareness, Self Confidence, Mind Defense and finally counter Submission. This may seem like a long process but it’s proven, and has saved millions of lives around the world.
‘Doing the best at this moment puts you in the best place for the next moment’ – Oprah Winfrey
The key towards empowering women and children is by enabling them to know how to survive in a difficult situation so they could lead to help save the lives of other women and children, who could be exposed to such heinous crimes, by sharing their stories and teaching them.
‘Every survivor of sexual assault deserves to be heard, believed, and supported.’ – Hillary Clinton
We appeal to the Government of India: Hon’ble Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi; Hon’ble Minister of HRD, Shri Prakash Javadekar; Hon’ble Union Minister of Women & Child Development, Smt. Maneka Gandhi; and MP of Rajya Sabha for Uttar Pradesh, Smt. Jaya Bachchan to incorporate self-awareness, vocal defense, self-confidence and counter-submission techniques as a mandatory part of every school curriculum and at workplace. We should also include methods to train our men to respect our women at the grassroots level.
