Designate Crimes Against LGBTQIA+ Community as Hate Crimes!

September 6th, 2019- The Apex court of India declared that no human born in this land will remain devoid of their fundamental rights. The words of the judges made many people shed water from their eyes and the environment was of a resounding victory that day.

The struggle that organizations such as Naz Foundation Trust and others took in order to make consensual sex between adults legal, finally won its victory. But even though the courts have ruled in favor of human rights, there are many people who continue to treat LGBTQIA+ people with discrimination and at times, with hateful words and even violence. The transgender community remains vulnerable to the crude words of the people and oftentimes even being a target of violence. Many gay and lesbian 

Family rejection remains a cause of fear for many. On top of that, when such vulnerable people are attacked verbally or physically, the condition for them does not remain very good for long. Depression and anxiety are common among people of the community. 

Article 21 of the Constitution ensures the protection of personal liberty of every citizen. The Supreme Court has held that the right to live with human dignity, enshrined in Article 21. 

Today, we simply cannot allow it to go on forever. As a nation who are under the sacred refuge of an egalitarian constitution, it is time that we declare that we will not let people be treated with violence or discrimination. Transphobia and homophobia are still rampant in our society and we look towards our leaders of this great nation to help our cause.

We request our leaders to take further steps to protect the rights of our LGBTQIA+ community. We ask our leaders to make crimes against people of this community done out of hatred and bigotry as a Hate Crime.
