Dear Niz Goenkar, On the last day of monsoon session, Goa Assembly on Friday passed a resolution seeking official language status for Marathi. The private member’s resolution moved by independent legislator Naresh Sawal found support from the BJP-led coalition government. Deputy speaker and St.Andre BJP MLA Mr.Vishnu Wagh vociferously supported this resolution while Panjim BJP MLA Mr.Siddhart Kuncalienkar suggested a plebiscite before passing it. Konkani writer Damodar Mauzo said, "The Bill is anti-Goan, because if Marathi is made the official language of the state, it would dilute Goa's identity. Though we love all languages, only Konkani defines Goa's identity. Thus, this Bill attempts to strike at the roots of Goa's identity. Marathi has already been given more than its due in the Official Language Act. Konkani serves as a common bond between all communities of Goa. The introduction of the Bill in the state legislative assembly goes to prove that there are divisive forces at work. I would like to warn the politicians not to play with the sentiments of Goans in the name of religion and language." This hints at nothing but an attempt to sabotage and dilute identity of Goa and Goenkarponn. Could one imagine if such resolution was passed in Maharashta and Karnataka in favour of Konkani? We would have witnessed nothing less than "bandhs" and possible riots. Water levels have reached our necks. It's now or never. Without violence or barbarousness, in unison let's raise our voices against the enemies of Konkani, unite and make sure we save our "Maai Bhaas". Jai Kokni!
