WQW Community Post - 1117 Queen Street West (Canada Post Building)
22 Jul 2021

Dear Supporters of the WQW Community Post,

We have some important updates for you.

Over the last few weeks our petition has gotten the attention of local politicians, thanks to your efforts!

MP for Davenport, Julie Dzerowicz, has issued a press release calling for a stop of all Canada Post federal land sales to address affordability and the arts and culture community in crisis.  This is in direct response to the pending sale of 1117 Queen St West.

We welcome this press release and latest efforts from Ms. Dzerowicz.

You can also access it on Ms. Dzerowicz's twitter page.

Another update is that on July 14, 2021 City Councillor for Davenport and Deputy Mayor, Ana Bailao, brought a Motion to City Council and asked that:

  • 1)   the City Manager make a request to MP Anita Anand (Minister of Public Services and Procurement Canada) that she instruct Canada Post to immediately halt the proposed sale of the publicly-owned former Canada Post site at 1117 Queen Street West.
  • 2) to request Canada Post take measures to retain the building in public ownership for the purpose of establishing a cultural and arts hub for the neighbouring community and the City at large.

The Motion was supported by Mayor Tory and 23 other councillors.

We welcome the Motion from Ms. Bailao and the City's future efforts.

To supporters of the WQW Community Post and Public Lands in Public Hands - now is the time to keep the pressure up! Please share the petition, spread the word, and reach out to your local politicians, as well Ms. Anand.

More updates will be posted in the coming weeks.
