Government of Canada: Reform or Abolish the Senate
Government of Canada: Reform or Abolish the Senate
The Issue
Right Hon. Stephen Harper, Prime Minister of Canada
Hon. Thomas Mulcair, Opposition Leader, N.D.P.
Hon. Bob Rae, Leader, Liberal Party of Canada
Daniel Paillé, Leader, Bloc Quebecois
Elizabeth May, M.P., Leader, Green Party of Canada
Hon. Noël A. Kinsella, Speaker of the Senate
We, the undersigned, are deeply concerned about the attitudes of certain current members of the Senate of Canada.
We are asking the leaders of all political parties in the House of Commons to immediately examine the overall costs of running the Senate, including all expense claims.
We are asking the Government of Canada to immediately release all current expenses, including salaries to the Canadian public. We want the Government of Canada, and all political parties, to review the Senate and its operating expenses, and to justify its costs to the Canadian taxpayer. If reforms to outlandish expense claims cannot be performed, a call to abolish this “ place of sober second thought" will be necessary. At an economic period where most taxpayers can only dream of the compensation issued to Senators, we need more accountability for this institution, with a solution to lower its costs to Canadians.
