Every year upwards of 100 million sharks are killed for their fins. Not only is this an unsustainable fishing practice, but it is also a wasteful practice. Often times the live bodies of the sharks are thrown back into the water after being finned, leaving the sharks to sink to the bottom of the ocean and drown. Because of the huge industry for shark fins more species are being threatened with endangerment and extinction each year. However, we can help change this; we need to help change this!
Sharks play an important role in our oceans. They provide balance within the ecosystem, feeding on fish who feed on phytoplankton. It is these tiny phytoplankton that provide us with close to half of the world’s oxygen. But as shark populations decrease, predators of phytoplankton increase, causing a decrease in the creatures that give us this oxygen. We need sharks in our oceans to maintain a healthy ecosystem balance.
On March 27th, 2013 Members of Parliament voted against Bill C-380, which would have banned the import of shark fins into Canada. If this bill had passed Canada could have became a global leader in the next step towards shark conservation. As more countries ban the import of shark fins there becomes less of an industry for them. This needs to happen in order for shark populations to become stable.
By signing this petition you are asking the Government of Canada to re-open Bill C-380 and take a re-vote. The last vote didn't pass by 4 votes. Let's change 4 peoples’ minds and ban the import of shark fins into Canada!
