Covid 19 mandates are further dividing Canada, a country which has seen some of the highest vaccination rates in the free world.  They have been implemented to help slow the spread of Covid 19 and to save our hospital systems from being overwhelmed.  Vaccines have been offered to almost all citizens who wish to access them with the exception of children under the age of 5.  There remains a portion of the population that has decided they do not want to receive the vaccine for reasons that are personal to them.  Mandates have targeted these individuals with the intent to persuade them to receive a vaccine, by punishing them in their careers and personal lives.  

To put this into context, truckers in our country who are unvaccinated have to quarantine at home after returning to Canada from the US.  Yet truckers with two doses are able to get through our border and return to Canada with no quarantine restrictions.  However new science presented by Dr. Moore (Ontario) and Dr. Tam (Canada) shows that Omicron can evade two doses of the vaccine.  So double vaccinated truckers can still spread covid when they return, similar to the unvaccinated people that we are punishing.  Therefore the vaccine mandate is not really providing protections to Canadians.

An important timeline to consider:

November 19, 2021 - The Canadian government announces the trucker mandate to come into effect January 15, 2022.  Delta is the dominant variant and Canada has no reported cases of Omicron

January 15, 2022 - The federal government follows through with punishing unvaccinated truckers who have jobs crossing the border.

February 3, 2022 -  Dr. Moore, the chief medical officer for Ontario states that new research shows that Omicron is able to evade some of the immunity offered by two doses of a vaccine.  He goes on to suggest that the province will have to review mandates going forward as they may not be having that much impact.  (https://globalnews.ca/news/8591638/ontario-covid-update-february-3/

As you can see above, the federal government announced their trucker mandates on Nov. 19, 2021 prior to knowing virtually anything about Omicron.  In the past week two of the top medical officials in this country stated that two doses of the vaccine does very little to stop the spread of covid.  Therefore the mandates no longer match the current science.  This brings us to an important point.  The government has asked it citizens continually throughout the pandemic to understand that this virus is new and that they will adjust mandates to match current science.  However in this scenario the Federal government refuses to adjust their policies to match science.  They should end vaccine mandates.

If this disease is going to be endemic as Dr. Tam states, then it seems that the answer is to increase testing and greatly increase our spending on healthcare while continuing to encourage vaccination.    By signing this petition you are asking Federal and Provincial leadership in this country to end or modify vaccine mandates to reflect current science.  Vaccine mandates were a band aid that we used in the pandemic, however they no longer seem to be a useful health care tool, and they are being weaponized as a political tool.  We can't mandate ourselves forever, eventually we need to shift our thinking to match the reality of our foreseeable future.

*For transparency I am fully vaccinated and boosted, I am tired of seeing politicians drooling over the opportunity to divide our country and attempt to politicize this pandemic for their own gain.  I have no affiliation with any political party.
