Why this petition matters

Menstruators may choose between pads, tampons, panty liners, period panties, and menstrual cups - however, periods themselves are NOT a choice. Affordability shouldn't be either. Menstrual hygiene is a human right.

Those who cannot afford the costs associated are victims of "period poverty", and often have to allocate savings to food & other basic needs. This leads to unsafe practices, such as using toilet paper, old fabrics, and changing period products less frequently. These practices, in the short and long-term, can have devastating health repercussions, like Toxic Shock Syndrome (fatality rate of >50%).

Periods are known to cause emotional and mental distress and the added burden of not knowing whether one can afford their next period shouldn't be a stressor. Studies show that when this financial barrier is omitted from the equation, one can better their performance in schools and workplaces, and improve quality of life.

If you think period poverty isn't an issue in Canada - think again. In Canada, over 34% of surveyors reported "budgetary sacrifices in order to afford menstrual products" according to a study by Plan International Canada in 2019. This was two years ago - and the situation has considerably worsened due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

We have taken the initial small steps to eradicating period poverty. However, periods don't stop after high school, and aren't only within the bounds of certain provinces either. Canada recognizes this issue, and I know you do too. We can follow in the footsteps of our global neighbour, Scotland, which has already made period products free through the The Period Products (Free Provision) (Scotland) Act 2021. Canada can make them easily accessible at pharmacies, grocery stores, high schools, workplaces, universities, and homeless shelters - Canada can #providetheperiod.

I started this initiative way back in May 2021, and thought of it long before then. However, I feel I can no longer keep waiting, so I call on all Canadians. Change begins with you, so help me make this vision a reality. 1 Canadian at a time and 1 signature at a time, because menstrual hygiene is a human right. Period.

Warm Regards,
