First of all, I'm thrilled at the uptake of our petition. I've read every comment and I'm blown away by the thought and time spent writing such wonderful words of support.
We have a long ways to go to gather enough signatures to make an impact so I urge you to take 2 minutes and share our petition on Facebook and Twitter. Every signature counts!
The reason for this message is to share a comment that was posted tonight. It was so well written that I had to share. Thank you Robert Elms of Winnipeg for writing such an articulate message. I couldn't have said it better myself.
"Well over 30% of the world's air pollution is created by internal combustion engines. Therefore, facilitating a switch to non-polluting, electric-powered vehicles is the most expedient and least expensive method of dramatically reducing air pollution in a relatively short period of time. Electric vehicles offer other advantages, too. Powering a vehicle with electricity costs much less than using a gasoline motor. Also, electric vehicles have much simpler drive trains (about one tenth the number of moving parts.) Therefore, it costs much less to operate and maintain an EV than it does an internal-combustion-powered vehicle. When those fuel and maintenance savings are added to the purchase price of an EV, the total cost of owning an electric vehicle is actually substantially lower than the cost of owning a similar vehicle powered by an internal combustion engine. But most Canadians don't realize that. So, they're discouraged by the higher purchase price of electric vehicles. Also, Canadians in most provinces and territories are envious of the substantial incentives being offered to citizens of Ontario, Quebec, British Columbia, several American states, and many countries in Europe who buy electric vehicles. For those reasons, providing incentives to offset the higher purchase price would certainly encourage more Canadians to consider buying EVs. However, the primary reason why many Canadians won't buy electric vehicles is not price, it's range anxiety. Until we know that a sufficient number of fast-charging stations are available for us, when we take a trip, most of us will not purchase an electric vehicle instead of an internal-combustion-powered vehicle. Therefore, to be effective, any strategy to encourage a faster switch to electric vehicles must facilitate the installation of conveniently-located, level 3 fast-charging stations across the country. The success of those incentives would be dramatically increased if they were accompanied by a media campaign to let Canadians know about the many other advantages of electric vehicles, including the enormous fuel and maintenance savings they will enjoy by driving electric vehicles. Also, EV enthusiasts know that, compared to internal combustion vehicles, electric vehicles have a lower centre of gravity. And, unlike their sluggish gas-guzzling counterparts, electric motors deliver 100% torque to their wheels instantly. Consequently, the handling and performance of modern EVs is vastly superior to vehicles powered by internal combustion engines.
So, the Government of Canada will be very successful if its incentive strategy strongly supports the development of a nationwide network of Level 3 fast-charging stations and provides modest but meaningful purchase-price-reduction offsets. Also, it must include a comprehensive public awareness campaign to help more Canadians discover that quiet, environmentally friendly EVs are convenient, less expensive to operate, and much more fun to drive!"
