AUSTRALIAN POLITICIANS: ABOLISH THE TAX ON MENSTRUAL HYGIENE PRODUCTS

The “tampon tax” has long been a baffling issue to the women (and men!) of Australia. Since 2000 the Australian Government has taxed every menstruating woman 10% on menstrual hygiene products. To classify tampons, pads, reusable hygiene products and menstrual cups as luxury items when they are necessities is preposterous.

Share the Dignity’s sanitary collections support women who are fleeing domestic violence and homeless women. Let's revisit the monthly horror for these ladies:

• Many have to choose between food for themselves (and often their children) or to purchase pads or tampons;
• Homeless women are forced to suffer the indignity of creating makeshift pads from newspapers or hand towels and cleaning themselves in public toilets;
• Some women are forced to steal the items;
• Girls in some communities have to stay home from school because their families can't afford them.
Pads and tampons are NOT luxury items. Having our period is NOT a luxury.
Canada has abolished the luxury tax on sanitary items - an incredible result for the ladies across the pond.
Australia needs to do the same.
Recently President Obama admitted during an interview that he couldn't understand why the tax exists in America.
We say enough is enough. How can a bodily function be taxed?
Did you know that condoms, lubricants, sunscreen and nicotine patches are tax free as they're considered important health goods?
Why is the menstrual health of Australian women not important too?
No woman should suffer the indignity of not having access to pads and tampons, or not being able to afford them.
This is an election year. Let's use this timing to insist upon change. Share the Dignity is committed to seeing this happen.
It's estimated that our periods earn the government an eye watering $25 million per year.
