Alberta Massage Therapists need your help!

The majority of Massage Therapists in the province of Alberta want to become regulated under the Health Professions Act, and the four Associations which represent them have submitted a proposal to Alberta Health on September 4, 2020 through the Transitional Council for the College of Massage Therapy.

Alberta Massage Therapists who are members of one of the four Associations have completed 2-3 years of education in approved private career colleges and meet the same level of training as is required in other regulated provinces in Canada and are able to deliver massage therapy safely and effectively as a health service to their clients.

Additionally, all four Associations require their members to continue expanding their skills and knowledge throughout their careers through Continuing Education programming.

Massage therapy has material benefits for the clients’ physical, mental, and emotional well-being and helps them to maintain productive lives.  It is not a luxury, it is a necessity, and an integral part of Canada’s health care network.

Regulating Massage Therapy in Alberta will provide the professional recognition that these valuable paramedical health service providers should already have.  Regulating Massage Therapy in Alberta will bring added benefits to their clients’, like being able to use their treatment receipts as a medical expense for income tax purposes. Regulating Massage Therapy in Alberta will provide clarity for the general public through protected titles legislation as to who is and who is not qualified to deliver this valuable treatment.

I understand that on September 4, 2020, a joint proposal entitled “Formal Submission Toward the Regulation of Massage Therapy under the Health Professions Act” was submitted to Alberta Health by the Canadian Massage and Manual Osteopathic Therapists Association (CMMOTA), the Certified Registered Massage Therapist Association (CRMTA), the Massage Therapist Association of Alberta (MTAA) and the Natural Health Practitioners of Canada Association (NHPC) through the Transitional Council for the College of Massage Therapists of Alberta (TC-CMTA). I ask the government to move forward with the joint proposal for the self regulation of Massage Therapy provided by this group of Associations."
