Save Alberta’s Traffic Courts, and Preserve the Right to a Free Trial

The Alberta government has recently released in a hidden manner updates to how traffic court in Alberta is to function. The government intends to remove the right to a fair trial by instituting a guilty until proven innocent structure into the law. Under the new system, you will receive a ticket with a QR code that brings you to a website where you must pay the fine. Presently, if fined you could just show up at your court date written onto the given ticket in order to defend yourself, or plead down the charges if so desired. Under the new system a 150$ fee must be paid in order to even have your ticket “reviewed”. This puts a privilege/pay wall in front of the gimped ability you are given to defend yourself. Not only does this harm the poor and working class even more than the current fine structure, it removes your right to a free an fair trial as guaranteed in the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. The Alberta government has intentionally used the Covid crisis to shove this issue under the rug, and they fully intent to strip our rights without even telling you, let alone asking. This is a disgusting attack on our way of life, and we must stand up and defend our legal institutions from government over reach. Sign today to show your support.
