Football Is For Fans
The Issue
WVSSAC has said that only parents can attend unless the county is green, then you can bring siblings. These siblings are, in most cases, living in the same house and social distancing is not a reality. They have also said no students will be allowed to attend. No student section? Football is for family, community and students! All these kids are hanging out on a daily basis. They will be attending school together soon. Many of these kids have been together all summer, playing travel ball and baseball leagues in West Virginia. Many of the players have a girlfriend/boyfriend that they hang out with. Has anyone heard of a Covid outbreak amongst the kids? These families, communities and students deserve to cheer their team on.
Our governor can get the approval for siblings to attend these fall sports with their families. He can also get the student body approved to attend these games as well. There is plenty of room around our football fields for social distancing. There could also be a section designated for the last names A-L and M-Z. There could be a section designated for grandparents as well. These kids will be attending school together anyways, sitting outside together is not going to be an issue. When traveling to other counties it makes sense to limit it to immediate family and students only. With the re-evaluation of these rules our communities could come together safely and cheer on these kids. Without the reversal of this decision we will have small children at home alone once again losing out on a family experiences and making memories. We will have students wandering around in parking lots, and trying to find things to do, when they could be supporting their school and safely having a good time at a sporting event.
My son is a Senior this year and our family has been attending Friday night lights since he was 8. My two younger kids have not missed many games if any. This has always been a family outing and a time where we come together as a community and celebrate our athletes. Football is for fans. Football is for community. Football is for students. Our kids deserve to be cheered on by their families, community, and student body!
