I am calling for change within the justice system for sexual abuse victims/survivors, after the police have dealt with and taken the case to court.  

My case for example; the perpetrator delayed court proceedings and trial whilst using mental health as an excuse. When in fact it was deemed that she was fit for court by a professional. 

On the first day of trial, the accused took an overdose (not the first attempt when due to appear in court), in attempt to back up her mental health pleas and delay proceedings. 

The court was then held the next day to close the case as she was deceased. I was sat in court, the justice knew I was sat in court. There was no acknowledgment to me as the victim what so ever. 

When leaving the court itself, both barristers approached myself & the officer in charge of the case & two of my friends who also appeared in court with me. One of my friends asked “where is any justice here and acknowledgment for the victim” to be told by her, my barrister.. “I have another trial to go to, but if you want to hang around I will see if I have a minute to talk to you afterwards” obviously I declined, as you can imagine. 

I have created this petition for victim voices to be heard. Lessons need to be learnt within the justice system towards the victims as in my instance I felt like I was just a number to the justice system as soon as the trial was closed. 

Other victims/survivors have had the same reaction or similar and it is time to make a change. Victims are not just a number and need the support/acknowledgment/closure & justice.
