Review and change the pit bull type standards used by police to seize dogs.

The Issue

The “Pit bull type” standard guidelines  put in place to give police the power to seize dogs is out dated and vague. The guidelines in todays times will fit many breeds and numerous pets are being seized because they fit the “type” This is determined mainly by clearly untrained and insufficiently knowledge people whom go from a list. There are now breeds in the U.K that are NOT pit bull but are being seized. The rules and guidelines need to be changed to reflect this. Dogs when seized are miss treated and are in anyones opinion malnourished. Dogs should not be seized instead should be reviewed by a professional before being removed from the owners. Paperwork proving the breed should also be accepted and not ignored. It costs the owners substantial money to fight to prove the dog is not a pit bull and in fact the responsibility under U.K law is that for the police to prove it is with substantial evidence from professionals. This can be done not by removing the dog but by involving vets and reviewing documentation before the dog is taken. I ask the guidelines are reviewed and substantial measurements and guidelines are implemented and rules around instant seizure changed.
