COVID-19 measures have greatly impacted everyone, particularly tattoo artists and personal service workers who are high risk for economic catastrophe and infection.

Many tattoo artists and personal service workers  are self-employed, and rely on clients' appointment fees to pay both work and home bills.  Cancellations, rescheduled appointments, and loss of child care during COVID-19 have all negatively impacted us, and many of us may not be able to re-open our doors once this is all over.

There is already no paid time off/sick leave for self-employment, so many are forced to choose between potential bankruptcy.  The very nature of our industry is close contact, often in small studio spaces, where despite using our above-average knowledge of sanitation practices, we are exposed to airborne transmission with every possible cough or sneeze from our clientele. Any licensed tattoo artist or licensed body piercing worker infected with COVID-19 has the ability to transmit the infection quickly to his or her full book of clients on any given day, even before symptoms arise.

As with our colleagues in the States and in other countries we need more than 10% reimbursement of wages (currently what the Trudeau government is offering up to a maximum of $25,000).

The need for an Economic Hardship package is immediate and should include the following;

-Assistance with rent

-Greater Assistance with employee salaries

-“Equal relief/aid funding of self-employed licensed tattoo artists & licensed body piercers as we are not covered under the current proposed relief bills being voted on at the Federal level

We the undersigned plead with our elected officials to hear our warnings and cries for help as we not only see our own economic plight but also the sacrifice of our livelihoods as we struggle to keep our communities healthy. “
