Animal shelters are meant to provide animals of all backgrounds a second chance at life by placing them in loving homes, however, Hamilton Animal Shelter and Adoption Center believes otherwise. This "shelter" has been euthanizing surrendered cats and dogs, without requiring any form of veterinary documentation or examination, for a flat fee of $100. You read that correctly. An owner, as disgraceful as it sounds, can drop off an unwanted animal at Hamilton Animal Shelter and have it euthanized. On top of these egregious acts, employees of the Hamilton Animal Shelter have also managed to euthanize an outstanding number of cats for medical conditions that are easily treatable with antibiotics. For instance, A grey domestic shorthair kitten was found and brought to Hamilton Animal shelter on May 22, 2017. It was determined the kitten had roundworm. Roundworm happens to be an illness that can simply be treated with the use of a deworming medication. That kitten was not administered any documented veterinary care and was euthanized, likely with an insufficient amount of medication, the same day. This was a similar story for 46 cats that day. I cannot begin to fathom the number of animals who have been mercilessly killed in this fashion. This shelter lacks morality and it is painfully obvious when they have euthanized animals before the required 7 day waiting period after intake, utilized medications meant for the euthanization of dogs on cats, and has not provided clean living spaces for all animals. Imagine your pet getting out of the house or off the leash, and you visit a shelter such as this one to search for your loved one only to find out that they have been put down or, if you're quick enough, are living in filth. 

So what do we need to do? This facility needs change. It's been made abundantly clear that those who are employed in this shelter severely lack compassion and morality and should not have the ability to work around such vulnerable animals, or any animals for that matter. I suggest that those who have been partaking in the abuse at this shelter be removed from employment and that the township issue a formal apology for sweeping this scandal under the rug for so long. We need to see trained, ethical, and animal loving individuals working in this facility. These animals deserve better.
