The proposed 3.9% rent increase by the Govanhill Housing Association is not a one off increase. The association has been aggressively increasing the rent since past several years. Around 10-12 years ago, association’s rent for one bedroom flat was around £175/month. With this proposed increase it will become £356/month. This is more than double in the past 10 years.  Comparing this unaffordable rent increase, the private sector has been sensible by taking into account the income of their tenants, which in fact has declined in real terms since the recession of 2008. For instance 10 years ago, an unfurnished one bedroom flat was around £300/month in the private sector, and today it’s around £375. The Association must be doing something wrong. It has recently received millions in grant from government – our tax money. We request the Scottish Government, Scottish Housing Regulator and City Council to look into the affairs of the Govanhill Housing Association and to freeze this unbearable and unaffordable rent increase.
