#ItStopsNow - Help us end gun violence in our streets

At a recent rally on the state Capitol steps on Saturday, a relative of Harrisburg shooting victim Rayon Brarxton, who died over the Thanksgiving weekend, told the crowd of hundreds:
"Make it stop. You have the power."
Indeed they do. And we can.
Starting today, the Editorial Board of PennLive/The Patriot-News launches #ItStopsNow, our own effort to fight the scourge of gun violence in our streets.
Through editorials, op-Eds, news coverage and an online petition drive we intend to call attention to constructive efforts to fight gun violence, to profile the people behind those efforts and to call for the kind of legislative and social change that, while it may not end this sickening epidemic, may at least slow its growth.
Please add your name to this petition calling on Gov. Tom Wolf and the Pennsylvania General Assembly to enact proposed legislation that would require Pennsylvania residents to obtain a license for possession, use, manufacture, control, sale or transfer of firearms.
We also call for bans on assault-style weapons and high capacity magazines as adopted in New York and Connecticut.
In the City of Harrisburg, we encourage Mayor Eric Papenfuse, the City Council and school officials to:
1. Begin teaching peaceful methods of conflict resolution to city students.
2. That the Papenfuse administration partner with the YMCA or YWCA to start monthly events for teenagers (in consultation with teens, so they actually show up). If Braxton's death hammered home any lesson, it is that more safe spaces for city youth, not fewer, are badly needed and in short supply.
3. That Harrisburg Police adopt a carrot/stick approach to those who appear headed down the wrong path. Police would partner with the appropriate social service agencies to offer help (the carrot). Should they decline, those individuals would find a they have a second shadow in the form of the police department (the stick).
