It's almost a year now since we started this advocacy to save Ghana's beautiful rivers and lands from the menace of Galamsey and irresponsible mining. At the 10th month mark I wish I had a better story to tell. Unfortunately, rivers Ankobra, Tano, Birim, Pra, Offin and the rest are worse than before. While the face of the Galamseyer has changed to more politically connected people, and with a more politically correct name, the destruction continues unabated.
All is not lost however, as we hear stories of communities like Akyem Akokoase , Suhum Abessim and Nzema Youth standing up to the destructive powers in an effort to reclaim whatever is left of their lands and their rivers.
Like Stonebwoy, a popular Ghanaian artiste puts it in his song, aptly titled "Greedy Men" , "Many men shall die. What about the future children? We are destroying generational wealth and the people are suffering. Think about the future children." I leave you with his song as we bring down the curtain on what has been a roller coaster year.
