This has been a good week. The government of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo finally seems to be serious about stemming this hydra headed menace ( Irresponsible / Illegal mining) that is destroying Ghana's water bodies and forests. Not only is a ban on prospecting and licensing of mining in forest reserves (something that should never happen in the first place), coming into force this week, the President has also deployed Ghana's Armed Forces to remove all those involved in mining in and along Ghana's rivers with immediate effect.
This renewed desire to stop the destruction of Ghana's rivers and forest cover couldn't have come at a better time, especially given recent warnings from experts that Ghana will have to import water in the next 5 years if the current trend continues. See some water bodies here:
We do not expect this to be an easy fight, especially given the multiple layers of vested interest in this mining sector. We do however, believe that it is the right thing to do. Our very survival as a country depends on it.
