This past week, after watching a heartbreaking plea from a group of Nzema fishermen in Jaway Wharf, along the Ghana - Ivory Coast border in Southwestern Ghana, about how their lives have been devastated by the destruction of the #Juen Lagoon on which they depended, I decided to find out for myself.
Using the #GoogleEarth app, I followed the #Tano river from Moseaso, near #Asankragua in the Wassa Amenfi West district to the Juen Lagoon in Jomoro district. Watch it here: https://youtu.be/S4wkL_i5Qro
It was an eye opening but very heartbreaking journey. It enabled me to see in real time how the once majestic #Tano River has been raped, desecrated and destroyed under the stewardship of Ghanaian citizens in politics, Ghanaian Chiefs and Ghanaian "big men" and women in society who finance and front highly destructive / irresponsible mining activities on and along this river.
This environmental genocide is being perpetrated by Ghanaians against their own and even against Ivorians. Who then, should the likes of our regular fishermen look to for justice? Where will their help come from? Any ideas? What does one do when the people behind his suffering are none other than his own kith and kin?
