Expand Medicaid to 500,000 and unemployment benefits to 170,000 North Carolinians

In the first few weeks of the 2013 North Carolina Legislative Session, two immoral and unconstitutional bills were passed by extremists in the NC General Assembly and later signed into law by NC Governor Pat McCrory. These laws deny Medicaid to 500,000 and emergency unemployment benefits to 170,000 North Carolinians.

The NC NAACP and Moral Monday/Forward Together Movement call on all people of good will to sign this petition to urge Gov. McCrory to call for a Special Redemption Session of the NC Legislature and rescind the laws denying Medicaid to 500,000 and emergency unemployment benefits to 170,000 North Carolinians.

Gov. McCrory rejected available federal Medicaid money that would have provided health insurance to more than 500,000 poor families. An estimated 2,800 people will die prematurely as a result of this decision. Almost one-fourth of working North Carolinians earn less than poverty wages for a family of four and more than one-fourth of North Carolina's children live in poverty.  One out of three children of color live in poverty.

He also rejected available federal funds for extending unemployment insurance to North Carolina families who were hit by the recession. This bill will cause an estimated 170,000 families to lose their unemployment benefits. North Carolina has one of the highest unemployment rates in the nation.

The Forward Together Moral Movement is calling on Governor McCrory to call a “Special Redemption Session” of the Legislature to rescind these two regressive and mean-spirited laws. The letter was delivered to Governor McCrory on December 26th. We will continue to collect signatures until December 23rd when we will hold a Moral Monday Service of Redemption at the State Capitol in Raleigh.

We hope to celebrate Gov. McCrory’s successful Special Redemption Session. However, this Moral Monday will become a service of Redemptive Witnessing modeled after previous Moral Mondays in Raleigh if Gov. McCrory and his ideological colleagues, Speaker Tillis, Senate Leader Berger, and Budget Director Art Pope, refuse to meet the people’s demand. We will witness against these policies which go directly against our deepest constitutional values and our deepest moral values. The Forward Together Moral Movement will not allow hundreds of thousands of our neighbors in North Carolina to be crucified without a moral witness.
