Gov. Janet Mills of Maine, keep standing up to Trump!
The Issue
Rather than addressing actual issues like good housing, jobs, and healthcare, Trump is using the power of his presidential platform to bully a lone trans girl athlete in Maine, whose school has had to increase security due to national attention from Republicans. Trump is not a champion of teen girls -- he bragged about backstage access to naked teen beauty pageant contestants. Maine rightly supports its youth athletes of all genders, and only 4 trans girl athletes have competed in Maine from 2013-2021. Trump is simply using a hot-button issue to divert attention away from the real harm that DOGE and other colleagues are causing across the federal government.
Gov. Janet Mills of Maine boldly stood up to Pres. Trump at a National Governor's Association event in Washington D.C. on Friday 2/21/25. Trump singled her out for not complying with his anti-trans executive order, threatened the state's funding, and said she would not get re-elected. She stated: "We'll see you in court." Trump immediately started an investigation into Maine's education department.
Gov. Mills released a statement on 2/21 reaffirming her stance:
"Maine may be one of the first states to undergo an investigation by his Administration, but we won’t be the last. Today, the President of the United States has targeted one particular group on one particular issue which Maine law has addressed. But you must ask yourself: who and what will he target next, and what will he do? Will it be you? Will it be because of your race or your religion? Will it be because you look different or think differently? Where does it end? In America, the President is neither a King nor a dictator, as much as this one tries to act like it – and it is the rule of law that prevents him from being so."
People across Maine and the US are fed up with Trump's assault on democracy. On President's Day 2/17/25, despite the cold winter weather, there were "No Kings Day" rallies all around Maine (Augusta, Bangor, Bucksport, Ellsworth, Machias, and Portland) and elsewhere in the US. Protestors peacefully opposed Trump's abuse of executive power and illegal behavior.
Let Gov. Mills know that we need her continued leadership to protect our trans youth and keep Trump's authoritarian ambitions in check! Her bravery should be applauded, so that she is urged to keep fighting Trump, and inspire other elected officials to do the same.
