The Florida Senate and House have secretly hidden a presumptive 50/50 custody clause for all Florida children into an alimony bill! The two things are unrelated.The title of these bills are ‘Dissolution of Marriage’ but the custody part has nothing to do with marriage. It will force judges to make a presumption that 50/50 custody is the rule of Florida for all children. This is dangerous. 50/50 custody can work but presumptive 50/50 will allow parents who have never been a part of their children’s lives to re-enter. It will also allow parents with criminal backgrounds or possible violence and substance abuse problems to have 50/50 custody. Parents who have concerns would have to overcome a legal presumption which is like climbing Mt. Everest! It would cost them more than they could ever afford to keep their children safe. It will also take away breastfeeding babies and children away from their mothers for long periods of time. Please help us get this bill vetoed. Even if you don’t live in Florida, other states could model their custody laws after this should the Governor make it law.
