Make Gorillaz cancel their NFTs

The Issue

Gorillaz has been all about environmental issues and political/societal call outs with their albums in the past, even making an album all about climate change, Plastic Beach, where they are overtly critical of such matters. so one has to wonder, why are they supporting a money laundering scheme that’s harmful to the environment?

NFTs: A non-fungible token is a unit of data on a digital ledger called a blockchain, where each NFT can represent a unique digital item, and thus they are not interchangeable. NFTs can represent digital files such as art, audio, videos, items in video games and other forms of creative works. NFT Wikipedia page in concept these aren’t bad, however NFT purchases and sales have become enmeshed in a growing controversy regarding the high energy use associated with blockchain transactions. In recent years, there have been a number of web articles and academic reports citing high electricity usage associated with the Proof of Work validation process used on the Bitcoin and Ethereum networks. Annual greenhouse gas emission estimates from these studies vary, depending on the level of renewable energy used, but can rise into the hundreds of megatons, and are comparable to those of a country like Sweden. A principal cause of these high energy requirements is the Proof of Work process used to validate blockchain transactions, which can include NFT purchases and sales. However, ethereum.org notes that these validation cycles consume energy at a rate that is largely independent of the level of NFT activity. So, it’s questionably unethical for the environment, and could prove to be harmful.

This needs to end before it starts. please sign this petition. I care about this band far too much to let them let this happen. I have faith that with this petition, if successful, will at the very least reach Damon, or anyone behind Gorillaz and there can be some clarity regarding this. Thank you for reading.
