Shanti Sahyog Center for Nonviolence
Aug 6, 2020

6 August 2020 marks the 75th painful anniversary of the atomic bomb attack on Hiroshima and Nagasaki (on 9 August 1945) by the United States during World War II.  The bombing wiped out 90% of the city, instantaneously killed 70,000 innocent people, led to the deaths of tens of thousands, due to radiation exposure and compelled Japan’s unconditional surrender on 15 August 1945, bringing to an end World War II.  Hiroshima Day is observed to raise awareness about the still existing threat of nuclear weapons and after effects of nuclear war - higher rates of cancer, miscarriages, infant deaths, disability, contamination of agricultural crops, plants, aquatic creatures and terrestrial animals.

Dear Signatories, today, as the city of Hiroshima holds its Peace Memorial Ceremony, to empathize with the anguish of the Hibakusha  (survivors & descendants of the atomic explosions on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945) let us pledge to adopt Nonviolent Defence, thereby politically legitimizing Nonviolent Conflict Resolution, which will lead to the dawn  of a World Beyond War. This can be done by promoting Shanti Sahyog petition #ChooseNonviolentDefence and our Call for Action #/s. Let us follow the path of Mahatma Gandhi, who affirms that:

"Nonviolence is a Weapon of the Strong".
