Odia is one of the oldest official languages in India. It is spoken by approx. 50 Mn people across the world with major presence in Odisha along with 5 other states of India.

The language is extremely rich in literature with a history of more than 11 centuries. A lot of ancient scriptures related to Indian culture have found their origins in Odia. The 2nd highest number of Manuscripts in the world is written in Odia (2.13 lacs) next only to Sanskrit, but still more than Hindi. It is one of the six Indian languages to get the honorable Classical Language tag.

Odisha being the 11th largest state in India by population, produces a significant number of artists every year. Many of them use Odia as their primary language of communication. And more depend solely on their art form for survival.

Earlier the profession of Actors, Writers, Lyricists, Directors used to be appreciated on traditional media like TV, Radio, Newspapers only. Over the last few years however, with Digital turning the world around with a new age media source; fellow Odia artists are still devoid of this huge benefit. They still live in the age of old world media and their art still maintains distance from a potentially exploding number of digital audience.

One of the major reasons behind this is Google's (India's largest Search Engine) inability to support Odia as a language. Neither is Odia translatable on Google, nor can Odia content be used in Adwords or Adsense; thus restricting both promotion and revenue for Odia content curators. This is discouraging our people in making new age digital content in Odia, their mother tongue, which is a huge loss to this great language.

A language must constantly evolve in order to stay relevant. Appreciation and encouragement is what is mostly required to keep evolving; something that Google needs to provide for this language to have practical usage in the years to come.. And not just be a 3rd language subject in fancy English Medium schools of Odisha and India.

We resolve to support Odia's inclusion in the list of Google supported language on all its platforms and products. Do you?
