We don't have to wait until our legends are gone to recognize their contributions. May 16 marks the birthday of the legendary entertainer Janet Jackson, and a Google doodle would be a tremendous way to ring in the occasion.

Some of the best Google doodles are historical figures, or pioneers in their field. Janet Jackson and her accomplishments fall right in line with that incredible tradition. Janet broke countless barriers as a force in popular music throughout the 80's, 90's and 00's. Now, in the 2020s, she continues to make headlines with a pending album, tour, and documentaries.

Janet has been entertaining audiences for 45+ years. After acting in memorable roles throughout her childhood and teen years, Janet's ascent to legendary artist began with 1986’s groundbreaking album “Control.” 1989's "Rhythm Nation 1814" would create another seismic shift through the industry when it became the first to blend socially conscious messages with intricate dance visuals. Janet never looked back as she cemented her identity as a trendsetter in music, videos and concert tours. Many of today's top artists cite Janet as an inspiration.
