The sci-fi inspired dream of being able to talk to your computer and effortlessly controlling technology with your voice has been with us for decades.

Now, we finally have something approaching that dream in the release of the range of Google Nest/Home devices (and others). But, it would seem, purely as a branding exercise, we are reduced to being forced to use two very narrow commands to trigger our devices - "Hey Google" and "OK Google".

I strongly suspect that the vast majority of Google Nest/Home users find that this pointless insistence by Google mars the interactive experience. We don't need to endlessly repeat the brand name as a mantra any more than we already do - we know very well who makes the product. Any social discussion involving the product will use the words "Google Home" or "Google Nest".

So I feel that this restriction is a quite blatant and horrible example of deliberate corporate egotism. One can almost feel the marketing executive's rush of pleasure as the world chants the company name daily, and I find it somewhat nauseating to participate in that. It is absolutely true that the Google brand name already forms an indelible part of our vocabulary, but I personally would like to draw the line at me or my child being forced to vocally invoke a corporate entity, rather than an entity of our own devising, to turn on my lights every day. I do not wish to call the name "Google" to the sky and then have it bestow things upon us, though I will gladly use quality products that they offer to achieve the desired results. It is, in fact, disturbing to me that Google demands that we should and that customers should accept such demands without pause.

The reality is, for most people the desire to buy Google Home products outweighs their dislike of the objectionable trigger phrases (I'm one of them), so there will likely be no "voting with their wallets" scenario here. Google will probably continue to force this trigger phrase as long as people continue to buy. I don't suggest you shouldn't buy the products, I suggest we should swamp Google with voices of protest until they give the customers what they want - that is, the ability to define our own trigger phrases for our Google Nest/Home products.

Rick Osterloh is Google's head of hardware and looks after this stuff.  I gave up trying to get his actual email address so I am directing this petition at Google's Press Office (press@google.com). Don't forget to drop Rik a tweet, though, to let him know how you feel about this issue: https://twitter.com/rosterloh .

Or tweet his boss, Sundar Pichai: https://twitter.com/sundarpichai
