I apologize for the delay since the last update. I would like to thank our fellow students at the University of Maine for their continued support, as well as the leaders of the University of Maine Graduate Student Movement, who are currently advocating for healthcare rights and improved pay. I appreciate all of you who have signed the petition and encouraged others to do so.
I would also like to express my gratitude to the founder of a local social justice organization who signed the petition and with whom I enjoyed talking on the phone about their work at both the local and federal level. Thank you also to the founder of a national patient safety movement who informed me of their signature and shared the petition with others, and to the physicians who sent emails letting me know they signed.
I want to give a special thanks to Erin, who lost her beautiful daughter Willow, for signing, writing to me, and donating. I have included the link to her Change.org petition https://chng.it/gv6khHZN6Q and the picture for this update is of her daughter. Please sign her petition if you have not already done so. I have revised the petition to emphasize that children are being unnecessarily harmed or even killed, and that we need to take action to prevent this from happening.
Since the last update, the hospital focused on in this petition has closed clinics and departments, faced several medical negligence lawsuits, and had a student raise concerns about HIPAA violations on YouTube. As the Maine legislature debates expanding healthcare coverage to more people, it is crucial to ensure that the healthcare provided is of high quality. Therefore, I want to extend a special thank you to pediatric sub-specialist Dr. Anne Yered, whose dedication to patient safety at Northern Light Eastern Maine is at the heart of this petition. You are a hero, and we need more heroes like you to step forward. This petition is a way to thank you and let you know that we all support you!
