Make an OVA for Welcome to the NHK

The Issue

To this day, the 2006 anime series made by Gonzo "Welcome the the NHK" is still being enjoyed by fans and newcomers alike. One need only glance over the many forums which are thriving with activity to understand that there is still an audience for this story, and within these forums there is one topic which dominates the rest: What was with the ending?

For anyone who has seen the show, they will know that the series has quite an anticlimactic, inconclusive and dare I say unsatisfying ending. Not everyone agrees on this of course, but a vast number of fans were left scratching their heads over the fairly rushed and inconclusive ending.

Throughout the show, the relationship between Satou and Misaki is presented in a rather unambiguous romantic light. There are several points in the series in which both characters declare that they need each other and Satou himself outright declares his love for Misaki by the end of the series.

Had the series ended with Misaki and Satou sitting together, warming up from the cold in Misaki's abandoned family home this would have been more consistent with what the series was building up over 24 episodes. The actual ending however (despite it also being somewhat consistent with the series' tone and theme) was arguably offensively too platonic and inconsistent with the thoughts, feelings and presentation of both characters.

The contract which the two sign (which resembles a suicide pact) is indeed a nice touch but the emotions displayed by both characters at the time appear somewhat hollow and detached. The abrupt ending left many viewers wanting more and 8 years on, fans and newcomers are demanding a more satisfying and consistent ending.

I suggest that Gonzo animation studio create an additional short to one of their most critically-acclaimed anime series of all time in the form of an OVA or possibly something more "feature-length". The purpose of this would be to fully establish what a few extra frames of animation would have done in the series: a real, unambiguous relationship between the lead character Satou and Misaki.

Although fans of "Welcome to the NHK" are not unanimous on this matter, the number of fans for this proposal certainly outweighs the number against.

Please let your voice be heard by signing this petition and proving that there is still demand for this excellent anime series! Thank you!
