Save the Maid of Sker

Save the Maid of Sker

The issue

The Maid of Sker is a heritage listed paddle steamer located in Bischof Pioneer Park, Nerang at risk of being turned into heritage scrap metal.

Time and weather have taken their toll on the old girl and support is required from the community to compel the the Council and State Government to support the desperately needed restoration including long term management plan. State and Local funding is required to ensure the survival of this local icon.

As a community we are at a crossroad. We can standby and let our local heritage die or fight to keep our history alive. By signing this petition you will show support for your local community. Cr Tracey Gilmore has pledged her support to save the Maid, but we need other councillors "on board" (pardon the pun!).

Built in 1884 she transported cargo and sugar cane between the Gold Coast and Brisbane. Strong and stoic she continued to operated until the 1970's. During these years these vessels were common along the river, however today she is the last remaining 19th century vessel from the area, the only one left!

Kevin Reins, Gold Coast City Council's Heritage Team Leader, said at the time of it's local dedication and unveiling as a part of Nerang history "...it's a real landmark for Nerang, everyone is very fond of it, it's a museum piece now and it's nice that it's available for viewing by the public."

Bischof Park is also home to historic Preece House. The park is currently a unique place to visit our local history. The Maid of Sker and Preece House both stand as a testament of our local history.

Thank you in advance for your support of our community and local heritage.
